MOST students rely on a lift from mum or dad with a car full of belongings to get back to uni.

Not James Hutton, 20, though who instead will cycle to Germany, in just ten days, to continue his studies.

“I study German and Philosophy at university and have to spend a year in Germany as part of my degree,” said James.

“I decided instead of just getting the plane I would cycle to Heidelberg.”

The Oxford University student will spend a month completing a language course in Heidelberg before going on to Berlin for the rest of the year.

James, of Prince’s Gate, Savile Park, decided to take on the 600-mile challenge to raise money for the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (SCI).

He said: “I like to do quite a lot for charity. We are lucky in this country and we should be doing our best for those who aren’t as fortunate.

“The World Health Organisation says SCI is one of the most efficient charities there is. They help treat neglected tropical diseases.”

James began the 620 mile trip with two bags strapped to his bike containing the bare essentials including a tent, change of clothes, soap and a towel.

He set off last Thursday morning from his home and planned to arrive in Hull later that day before boarding the ferry to Rotterdam.

From there he will cycle along the River Rhine and plans to arrive in Heidelberg on Saturday July 30.

“The hardest bit will be cycling on the roads and up the hills at the start towards Selby,” he said.

“I can’t wait for the ride down the Rhine though - that should be amazing - and I’m really looking forward to the moment I cross into Germany.”

James is a former pupil of Crossley Heath School and now studies German and Philosophy at Oxford University.

He is aiming to raise £1000 for SCI and has already made been donated more than £650.
