July Project 2009: Full events schedule

The July Project, sponsored by Halifax, is Calderdale's most diverse festival for children and young people.

This year the 12 day-long festival will entertain and involve young people age 5 to 19 with events across the region from Wednesday 1 – Sunday 12 July.

The July Project is organised by Square Chapel Centre for the Arts, Eureka! The National Children's Museum and Calderdale Council.

Drama & Literature Events

Melvin Burgess

Famously controversial and with a reputation for dealing with hard-hitting themes, Melvin Burgess is justly known as the Godfather of young adult fiction. His first book, The Cry of the Wolf, was short listed for the Carnegie Medal which he later won with his controversial book Junk establishing him as one of the top ten Carnegie winners of all time. A unique opportunity to hear from Melvin about his writing, ask your questions and you might even get your book signed!

Heartbreak Productions invite you to dig out your threads, get in the groove and step back in time to the 1960s when life was mellow, things were cool and love was free. This unique take on one of Shakespeare's wittiest and best known comedies will take you on a psychedelic trip through the Forest of Arden; a most enchanting place to be, a place where characters are free to talk, where they can escape from the extremely oppressive world of the Court and find their own path to enduring happiness. The Frog Princess by Wild Wood Theatre

Experiences from Terezin by Calderdale Theatre School

An exhibition and performance inspired by the Calderdale Theatre School's visit to Prague and Terezin. The evening will use the different art forms to interpret history and culture of Prague and the sombre atmosphere of Terezin, a WW2 concentration camp.

Sins of the Father by Grim North Theatre

A new performance by this innovative community theatre group. This ambitious piece contains expressive and abstract elements and explores enforced human morality and conflict with human nature; it looks at themes relevant to a post-religious society and questions the reality of an after-life.

Ready to rock the roof off Square Chapel? A team of experienced musicians and music 'pundits' will be judging as some of Calderdale's best young bands play live. The winners will receive a chance to record their own demo CD in a professional standard studio and they will be interviewed on local radio, spreading the sound of their success across the airwaves. Suitable for ages 9 – 19

Improve your mountain biking skills as our qualified instructors put you through your paces. Initially your riding style will be assessed as you are taught the correct methods for controlling your bike effectively before moving on to tackle exciting obstacles including water features, steep embankments and logs – pull some wheelies and see how high you can jump! The stunning finale to your mountain biking will be putting it all into practice on the Calderdale hills and countryside! Your own bikes and helmets can be used but equipment is also available to borrow, please mention when booking if you would like to borrow equipment. For maximum progress book on to all three sessions.

Once again Eureka! is opening its doors to all the residents of Calderdale. Visit the museum for FREE and take part in the range of activities over this fun-filled weekend to celebrate the end of The July Project 2009. There will be lots going on for children and families, including fairground rides, arts and crafts, workshops, entertainment and a chance to explore the museum for as long as you want.

Pleased to be part of The July Project for a second year running SNO!zone will be bringing over 10 tonnes of snow to Eureka! to create a special toboggan run for everyone to have fun on.
