Kerbside wins battle with Sita
RECYCLING minnow Kerbside Calderdale has won a David and Goliath battle with waste giant Sita over unpaid bills.
Sita sent the not-for-profit organisation a demand for 1,553.65 in March for training staff they were hoping to recruit.
But Kerbside said it had never asked to take part in the day-long event and put in a counter claim for money they said Sita owed them for lost working hours.
This week, Sita buckled and sent a cheque for 1,024.31 to Kerbside in a bid to settle the long-running dispute.
Kerbside's chief executive, Paul Brannigan, said as far as he was concerned, it was Sita that owed Kerbside money and not the other way around.
Chris Haddock, director and solicitor for Kerbside, told the Courier in March that he was prepared to see Sita in court over the matter and would also pursue the multi-national for just over 1,000, which he maintained was still owed to Kerbside.
In an e-mail to Kerbside, Sita spokesman Nick Browning said: "I am not prepared to spend more management time, energy and focus attending court and dealing with an issue for what, in my company's terms, is a small amount of money."
Mr Brannigan said: "It is not the most magnanimous response but we will make good use of the money in our struggle to keep our campaign alive."
Kerbside collected recyclables from 20,000 homes between Halifax and Todmorden until earlier this year when Calderdale Council put Sita in change waste collection and recycling.
