Kids make it a grand Poetry Slam

YOUNGSTERS got creative with words during a poetry performance.

The children from eight primary schools throughout Todmorden took part in Todmorden Poetry Slam, organised by the Touchwood Project.

It saw around 200 pupils perform their own pieces at Ferney Lee School, Todmorden.

Pupils collected local stories before retelling them in their own special way.

Richard Hemingway, secretary of the Shaggy Dog Storytellers, which up the Touchwood Project, said: "The storytelling was used to inform the children that we are all different but at the same time we are all human."

Professional storytellers went to the school and told stories to the youngsters.

The tales were then retold by poets, giving the youngsters inspiration for their own poems.

Mr Hemingway said: "It was great and the standard was better than you would get from adults. "
