L-plate driver crashed his mum's MG at 70mph
A SON crashed his mother's sports car into another vehicle after losing control at 70mph.
Benjamin Peel, 23, admitted dangerous driving and driving without insurance.
He was given a six-month jail sentence, suspended for 18 months with 100 hours of unpaid work.
Peel was also banned from driving for a year, ordered to pay 750 compensation to the victim, Peter Summers, and 250 prosecution costs.
Bradford Crown Court heard that the high- speed crash happened on Halifax Road, Shelf on July 6 at 10.30pm.
John Bull, prosecuting, said Peel, of Rock House, Halifax Road, Bradford, overtook a taxi on the road, which has a 30mph speed limit.
He said the MG sports car Peel was driving headed towards the traffic island and had to swerve left to avoid it.
"It hit the nearside kerb which threw the vehicle back across the carriage way into the path of Mr Summer's car who was unable to avoid a collision," said Mr Bull.
Mr Summers was taken to hospital suffering from severe abdominal bleeding. His car was a write-off.
The police were called and Peel was arrested at the scene. He told officers that he could not remember the accident.
He said he was a provisional licence holder and the car belonged to his mother.
Giles Bridge, for Peel, said he had taken antibiotics before taking the car. He said the drugs could cause nausea.
Mr Bridge said Peel was sorry.
The Recorder of Bradford, Judge Stephen Gullick, branded Peel's driving "nasty".
He said: "This was a serious incident, particularly aggravated by the fact he should not have been driving anyway."
Judge Gullick said he would not give an immediate custodial sentence because of Peel's remorse and lack of previous convictions.
