Les is aiming to be a Cutt above the rest at Town Crying European Championships
"HALIFAX is the place to be, full of life and vitality."
That's the message Calderdale town crier Les Cutts will be promoting at the Town Crying European Championships in Almelo, Holland.
Mr Cutts, of Turner Avenue South, Illingworth, Halifax, has written three cries about Halifax, alternative energy and town twinning for the event, from today to August 4.
The 49-year-old, a member of the European Guild of Town Criers and the Loyal Company of Town Criers, will be competing against bellmen from across the continent.
"This is the first time I have been abroad to represent Calderdale and Halifax in a town crier competition," he said.
"I'm looking forward to it, but I never practise.
"But I'm not going to write myself off because I finished joint seventh in the British Town Crier Championships in Northumberland on July 6. And I hope the content of the cries will help me win. I'm hoping the reference to windmills in my renewable energy cry will get the Dutch on my side.
"I'm sure I will be nervous as the crowds will be so big.
"My main aim will be to promote Halifax but I am also looking forward to meeting the other criers."
Visitors will hear his booming voice promoting renewable energy. He says "This has got to be the way forward, we can all produce wind."
His cry
Oyez, oyez, oyez
Greetings from the Halifax town crier
And bellman of the borough of Calderdale
Except the Lord keep the city
Halifax the place to be
Full of life and vitality
Piece Hall, Eureka, theatres too
There's always plenty of things to do
Museums, sport, parks and all
Why not visit the town hall
With architecture for all to see
Halifax the place to be
The Borough Market, Dean Clough
Wainhouse Tower
Something to do hour by hour
So don't just sit there
Start
Making making tracks and come and visit Halifax
God save the Queen
