Lloyds TSB chief told: We need you in Halifax

LLOYDS TSB boss Eric Daniels will soon be challenged to visit Halifax.

Despite pressure from the Courier, the bank's group chief executive has so far failed to give a date for his visit to the town.

Now Halifax MP Linda Riordan is giving him the opportunity to address some of the 6,500 HBOS staff in the town who fear for their jobs.

Her office is organising a second public meeting next month and she will be inviting Mr Daniels.

She said he must visit Halifax and she intended putting what pressure she could on him to ensure he does.

"We do need him in Halifax," said Mrs Riordan.

"It is important he sees how much the Halifax is part of the district's way of life and how much we need it here.

"We will be writing to him this week."

A spokesman for Mr Daniels could not confirm when he would visit town.

"He will, as part of the process, make an early visit to Halifax," said the spokesman.

In recent interviews, Mr Daniels has acknowledged the value of the Halifax brand in the mortgage market, as well as how the Courier campaign to keep thousands of jobs in its home town is gathering pace.

Meanwhile, doubts have now been expressed over the Lloyds TSB takeover of HBOS.

The uncertainty began after HBOS share prices fell to 94p at one point this week, followed by the announcement of the Government's 500bn rescue package, fuelling speculation that the takeover would not be necessary and that HBOS could weather the storm alone.

Premier Gordon Brown has agreed to a meeting with Calder Valley MP Chris McCafferty, who has asked for assurances that there will be no compulsory redundancies for HBOS employees in Calderdale.
