Looking back on golden days...

Clifford and Pauline Mallinson are celebrating their golden wedding today.

They met on April 1 1959 at the Salvation Army before going on to marry less than a year later at Christ Church, Sowerby Bridge.

They worked for the Salvation Army together for 16 years before moving to Backhold Road, Siddal, Halifax, where they have lived for the last 35 years.

Mrs Mallinson, 69, said: "We married less than a year after we met so I guess you could call it a whirlwind romance.

"We were both very young at the time, I was 19 and Clifford a year younger, but age wasn't an issue back then.

"We worked together at the Salvation Army for a number of years in Bradford, Kirkburton and Royston in Barnsley before settling in Halifax where Clifford grew up."

Mr Mallinson, 68, was also a bus conductor and a football referee.

Mrs Mallinson was a club singer and a welfare officer at Butlins before starting work with the Salvation Army.

The will celebrate with a trip to Skegness and one to Devon organised by their two children, Susan, 48, and Graham, 47. They also have eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
