M62 lorry fire was caused by exploding aerosols
A LORRY carrying a highly explosive load caught fire on the M62 causing chaos for commuters yesterday.
Six crews of firefighters from across West Yorkshire spent hours battling the HGV blaze between junction 24 at Ainley Top, and junction 25 at Brighouse, after it caught fire just before 7.25am.
The lorry was carrying bleach and aerosols of air freshener.
A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: "The aerosols started to explode and were shooting across the carriageway, as a result the entire westbound carriageway was closed for a time."
He said all three westbound lanes were closed, while the eastbound carriageway saw two lanes shut.
Both junctions 24 and 25 were closed to prevent more vehicles from joining the congestion.
Reader Graham Tyler sent us photographs of the lorry after firefighters put out the fire. Its contents can be seen spilling out across the M62.
Roads around Calderdale were also clogged as commuters tried in desperation to find other routes to their destinations.
