Man's day in the cells for copper-theft attempt
A man who tried to steal a copper lightning conductor from a church has spent a day in the court cells as punishment.
Brian Marsden, 31, of no fixed address, admitted attempted theft and failing to surrender to custody.
Calderdale magistrates heard that the offence occurred on May 30 at St Thomas's Church, Heptonstall.
Andy Wills said a passer-by saw Marsden trying to prise the conductor from the wall.
When he was challenged, Marsden walked off.
He was arrested and admitted the offence.
He told police he intended to sell the conductor for scrap.
