Miniature Pinscher Fudge defies odds to recover from mauling by another dog

PINT-sized pooch Fudge is back on all four paws - after vets feared he would never walk again.

The canine - who stands just 12 inches tall - spent four weeks in a full body cast after being savaged in an horrific attack by another dog.

The seven-year-old Miniature Pinscher had suffered a broken neck and a smashed bone in his back.

But two months later Fudge, who lives with his owner in Halifax, is fighting fit despite vets at the animal charity PDSA being unsure he would survive for long.

Staff at the PDSA hospital in Bradford who put him back together say they are amazed at the speed of his recovery.

PDSA senior veterinary surgeon John Taylor said: "His extensive injuries meant Fudge was unable to stand or use his front legs. The odds of him walking again were certainly stacked against him, but we weren't going to give up easily."

The veterinary team stitched up Fudge's wounds and placed the tiny dog in a full body cast to hold his broken bones in place.

In order to be effective, the cast had to immobilise his head and neck while allowing enough movement for him to breathe.

Fudge then spent nearly four weeks at PDSA, having two further casts fitted as he healed.

PDSA PetAid hospital provide free veterinary treatment to the sick and injured pets of owners in need.

To be eligible for PDSA veterinary care, pet owners must be in receipt of either Housing Benefit or Council tax Benefit.
