Minister quits church under cloud
AN EX-GAMBLER turned minister has left his church under a cloud of controversy after just one year.
Raymond Biddiss was voted out by two thirds of his congregation at Pellon Baptist Church, it is believed.
A church spokesman denied that his departure was due to his refusal to marry a couple who were living together.
But one churchgoer said a man and woman who had made alternative wedding plans at a Hebden Bridge church were now returning to Pellon Baptist Church to take their vows.
Those not attached to the church have been quick to sing the praises of the unconventional minister.
One friend of 49-year-old Mr Biddiss said he had been dedicated to the church and its congregation, and had set up a creche so mothers could go to work.
"Perhaps that was too radical for the congregation," said the friend. "But he is the kindest man, who would help anyone whether they members of his church or not."
Peter France, owner of Mount Pellon News, said Mr Biddiss had been a regular customer. He was surprised he had left the church.
"He always struck me as being extremely committed to his parish, I'd have thought he was the ideal minister," said Mr France. "All I know is that he came in to cancel his newspapers."
The Baptist Regional Minister for Yorkshire, the Rev Ernie Whalley, confirmed Mr Biddiss left Pellon Baptist Church following several meetings between the minister and his congregation.
Mr Whalley said: "There has been a mutually agreed conclusion to the ministry of the Rev Ray Biddiss at Pellon Baptist Church. This has been concluded amicably by all the people concerned. I am supportive of everyone involved including Mr Biddiss and the church."
The church is now looking for a minister to take over Mr Biddiss's role.
It is thought the father-of-two is on holiday with his wife, Wendy, following her recent health scares.
