Model shows 'exciting' plans for Square Chapel

A SCALE model of the proposed £4 million development at Square Chapel has been unveiled – and onlookers like what they have seen.

The ambitious scheme would transform the 18th century Grade 2* listed building by linking it to the Piece Hall via a copper and glass atrium.

A new 100-seat theatre, public sun terrace and continental cafe-bar with art gallery would also be created with a huge triangular foyer linking the two performing spaces.

Viewing the small plastic model, unveiled at a Halifax Urban Renaissance Town Team meeting, Phil Cairns, of Highroad Well, Halifax, said: "I'm very impressed.

"It's not easy to develop into two older buildings like this but what we have here seems to be something that is dynamic, exciting and in keeping with the area."

Town ward councillor Megan Swift said: "It looks really fantastic, an interesting, exciting development which would make a superb gateway to Halifax.

"It's taken a long time to get this far. Now I can't wait to see the project come to fruition."

Architect Robin Evans, of Evans Vettori, said he hoped a planning application would be in by February with work starting by the end of 2010.

But not everyone was happy with the plans which will mean part of the Piece Hall's south wall is knocked through to create an entrance to the Square Chapel

Heidi Parkinson, who owns Millie Moos painting pot coffee shop in the Piece Hall, said: "What you are doing is knocking right through my business and no one has even told me. That's despicable."

Sally Martin, of Square Chapel, answered her: "This project is still some time away, but someone should have spoken to you. No one wants to see your business go under. I'm sorry."
