Money and cars seized in clampdown

CASH and cars were seized in a police clampdown.

The police operation took place in the Queen's Road and Savile Park areas of Halifax to combat drug dealing and anti-social behaviour – the crimes residents complain about most.

Working with court enforcement officers, VOSA and drugs intervention workers, they took five vehicles off the road, recovered 435 in unpaid court fines and arrested 30 people on suspicion of a variety of offences.

Inspector Dave Browning, who led the operation, said: "People living in these areas have told us that reducing drug dealing and instances of anti-social behaviour are important priorities – so we are dealing with them.

"Officers have been out and about on the streets, making their presence known and getting in the faces of those involved in criminal activity.

"They have also been highly visible in the area to help reassure residents."

On the first day of the two-day crackdown six people were arrested – three on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A drugs, handing stolen goods and taking a motor vehicle without the owner's consent.

"Such results will clearly have an important impact on the local community and hopefully address their concerns," said Insp Browning.

He urged people to let the police know their concerns so officers could act on them.

"Everyone can get involved and tell officers what issues matter most to them in their local area. Simply turn up to your local Partners and Communities Together meeting."
