Mum volunteers for AIDS mission work

A HALIFAX mum is planning a trip to Africa to work with HIV and AIDS victims in a clinic and orphanage.

Amanda Thomason, 31, of Shay Lane, Ovenden, hopes to raise over 1,800 so she can volunteer in Kenya for a month at the end of March.

Miss Thomason, who is a volunteer for Overgate Hospice, Elland, went on holiday to Kenya last year with her partner and two children.

She witnessed the scale of HIV and AIDS in the country and said she was so moved she wanted to offer her help.

"It's such a poor country but everyone's just so friendly and happy. They just get on with it even though illness and disease is rife, I just want to help them in any way I can."

Miss Thomason, a student at Calderdale College, has qualified as a youth worker and works for Lifeline in Bradford.

Her trip is being organised by Volunteer Kenya, which provides accommodation for volunteers and places them in areas which need extra help.

She thanked local businesses for supporting her appeal and is continuing to fund-raise with help of friends and family.

"I did a sponsored walk last September for Overgate Hospice and raised over 400 so I'm hoping to do other things like that and raise some more money."
