Musician Joe's tuning up for the big final

A singer is tuning his guitar and warming up to fight for his place in a national music final.

Joe Robbins, 23, originally from Booth, Halifax, but who now lives in London, has made it to the regional final of the Live and Unsigned competition.

He now hopes local support can help him land a place in the national final at the 02 arena in London. He would then get a chance to battle for a 60,000 record contract.

Mr Robbins said his chart rivals are acoustic stars John Mayer and John Legend.

"I'm an acoustic male singer, and I accompany myself on the piano and guitar," he said.

He will perform in front of a judging panel at The Willows, Salford, Manchester on March 7.

Mr Robbins moved to South Africa with his parents when he was 16. He decided to stay in South Africa to complete his degree in business science at Cape Town University.

"I've kept going with my music over the years. I decided to do a degree first so I didn't have all my eggs in one basket, but now I'm doing it full-time.

"It's just a case of playing as much as possible and trying to collaborate with as many people as I can," he said.

He recorded his first album in 2007, while in Cape Town, and makes regular appearances in Manchester. He has followed his dream to London where he is currently appearing in open mic nights.
