Mystery group has eye on hijacking HBOS takeover
HALIFAX MP Linda Riordan has expressed concern following reports that a potential new bidder is looking at HBOS in the hope of snatching the bank away from the proposed takeover deal with Lloyds TSB.
The SNP's Alex Neil claimed a group based abroad that did not have a major high street presence in the UK was expressing interest in the bank.
Mrs Riordan said: "It appears we could now be in a situation where speculators from anywhere across Europe could try and make a killing if the HBOS share price falls further.
"Do these bidders have any concern at all about protecting jobs in Halifax? I would doubt that very much.
"I'm sure HBOS employees would like to know who this mystery bidder is. I don't think this is a time for secrecy."
But Mr Neil said: "It's an excellent bid. I'm optimistic."
