Nell McAndrew visits Halifax to promote breastfeeding

BREAST is best - that was the message from Nell McAndrew as she launched a pioneering breastfeeding group in Halifax.

The former model and I'm a Celebrity star visited mums at Costa Coffee, Woolshops, Halifax, to support the country's first iwantmymum.com community group, called Breastfeeding Beyond Babyhood.

The event coincided with Breastfeeding Awareness Week and aims to support mums of toddlers rather than newborns.

Nell, mum to 20-month-old Devon, said: "Feeding Devon has been such a positive and rewarding experience that I wanted to support more mums in getting the help and information they need.

"Iwantmymum.com provides this along with qualified breastfeeding councillors - it's a real boost for Halifax.

"Devon is a toddler now and I think it's wonderful to know the antibodies and other special ingredients in my milk help make him better if he's unwell, while reducing my own risk of breast cancer."

The group was established by Charlotte Young, of Bradshaw, Halifax, and Guardian columnist Annalisa Barbieri.

Charlotte said: "Everyone spends nine months informing women that "breast is best," yet there is so little practical support to assist mums. Our aim is to help parents make informed choices."

Selina Gough, 32, of Cragg Vale, Hebden Bridge, attended the event with 14-month-old Eli.

She said: "Breastfeeding is what nature intended. It is what we and our babies are designed for."

And Tracie Taylor, 36, of Greetland, brought along 20-week-old Dominic.

She said: "Most people at groups like this have started breastfeeding at birth, then drifted away. But it's fantastic to promote its benefits from nine months onwards."

Kim Jakubowski, 27, and Freya, one, of Sunnybank Crescent, Greetland, visited Costa.

"Breastfeeding is giving her the best start in life. I didn't breastfeed my son Aaron, now six, and he was quite poorly. But Freya has been really healthy. And it helps work off the baby weight too."
