New Halifax service plugs GP gap: Medical help for 6,000 patients

NEW GP services have opened to plug a doctors' shortage.

Health bosses are hoping the Park Community Practice and walk-in service at Horne Street Health Centre, off Pellon Lane, Halifax, will make it easier for people to get help.

Calderdale was identified by the Department of Health as one of the least well-served districts for GPs in the country last year and was given cash for more doctors' services.

The new practice and walk-in service is providing services for 6,000 patients.

Rob Webster, chief executive of NHS Calderdale, said: "These services bring much needed extra capacity to Calderdale.

"This will improve the responsiveness of care for patients and help reduce the workload of other local GPs. Every-body wins."

The practice provides regular GP health services as well as treating minor illnesses and ailments within the walk-in facility.

There are also plans to offer other services including improving access to cervical screening and contraception as well as more support during pregnancy.

The walk-in service is open to anyone living, working or visiting the area that needs urgent medical attention. It is open from 8am to 8pm seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Halifax MP Linda Riordan said: "These new services are much needed in this area."

She added it was particularly good to see that there would be more help for families.
