New viaduct cycle plans given public thumbs up
NEW plans for a cycle route and footpath over a historic Calderdale viaduct have been given the thumbs up by the public.
Residents and cyclists flocked to a busy consultation evening to see revised plans for the route which will take in the disused railway corridor over the West Vale viaduct.
Original proposals for the track were refused planning permission last year because of safety fears from nearby residents.
But Calderdale Council's latest 150,000 scheme was given a warm reception at West Vale Primary School.
Peter Hipwell, who lives by the viaduct, said: "My main concern with the previous plans was the safety issue with people coming on to the route who are not supposed to be using it.
"But some of these plans look to have addressed that and it could be a really good thing."
Cyclist and rambler Paul Turner, 47, of West Vale, said: "This route would be ideal for so many people young and old and make a real difference to the area."
The proposed route would link Hullen Edge with Clay House allowing pedestrians and cyclists to avoid the busy Stainland and Saddleworth roads.
Users would also enjoy spectacular views over the Grade II listed viaduct built in 1875.
David Proctor, of Calderdale Council transport and engineering services, said: "We have received some really positive feedback.
"We are really pleased with the new plans but these are still proposed routes so anyone who has any ideas over the scheme is urged to get in touch."
The plans, which link in to the National Cycle Network are being carried out in partnership with cycling organisation Sustrans.
