Now parks notch up six green flags
THE highest number of green flags have been handed out this year to Calderdale parks.
Shibden Park in Halifax and Centre Vale Park in Todmorden are the latest to be given the flags, which recognise the best parks in England and Wales.
They join Manor Heath, Ogden Water, People's Park and Wellholme Park, Brighouse, as award winners.
Judges were impressed with excellent use of green space, well-maintained facilities and the high standards of safety.
Shibden Park estate manager Deborah Comyn-Platt said: "Everyone is really pleased and I am extremely pleased for all the staff.
"We started a restoration project two years ago with the help of lottery funding and we were able to employ four gardeners and two rangers."
It was a double celebration for the estate as it also won the prestigious Green Heritage Award, sponsored by English Heritage, which is presented to sites with historic importance and had to meet a specific list of key criteria.
Samantha Ward, co-ordinator of Calderdale's entries into the Green Flag scheme, said: "It's a remarkable achievement that so many parks have successfully reached Green Flag status this year.
Councillor David O'Neill, said: "I encourage everyone to make the most of these spaces, especially in summer."
