Obesity epidemic could bankrupt NHS
FIGHTING the obesity epidemic could bankrupt the NHS, the Government was warned.
National Obesity Forum chairman Colin Waine said despite warnings to successive Governments in the last 30 years, there had been little action.
Research shows half the population will be obese within 25 years if trends continue.
Speaking at the forum's fifth annual conference in London, Dr Waine said the financial cost would have huge implications – "it could bankrupt the NHS."
Health Secretary Alan Johnson told the conference promoting exercise and healthy eating had to go "further, faster."
And one of the UK's 2,500 school nurses called for schools to have their s own equipment to weigh and measure children.
