Ofsted praise school for better safety
A PRIMARY school slammed by Ofsted for leaving a gate unlocked is now making good progress.
Hebden Royd Church of England School, at Mytholm, Hebden Bridge, was rated inadequate by inspectors in October and given a notice to improve.
They told the school to ensure its procedures for safeguarding pupils' welfare met statutory requirements and that staff received the necessary training.
The inspectors were critical of the gate to the school yard being unlocked, yet it has previously been agreed that it should left that way for use in emergencies.
"It is really disappointing that details like this can result in an inadequate rating," said head teacher Gretl Young. But, following the latest visit, inspector Angela Headon said the school was now making good progress.
"The school has robustly tackled the safeguarding issues, which led to the notice to improve and leaders are continuing to imp-rove pupils' self-assessment skills and the school's tracking and assessment systems.
"Detailed risk assessments, including those related to visits, school routines and the school site are fully completed.
"They have taken steps to deal with previous concerns regarding pupils' safety and security in the playground."
Hebden Royd School came out of special measures in 2005 and in 2007 was rated by Ofsted as good.
