Old offices for community

A COMMUNITY association has been given the go-ahead to take over and redevelop Hebden Bridge Council Offices.

It wants to create a multi-purpose town hall, meeting and function rooms, as well as providing space for offices and hi-tech businesses.

Calderdale Council Cabinet has decided to give Hebden Bridge Community Association a 40-year lease on the building in St George's Street, which is now used as offices and for parish council meetings.

Ian Cooper (Con, Todmorden) who has responsibility for safer and stronger communities, said: "If we go ahead with this I am confident it will create a feeling among local people that they have more local influence and identity."

The cabinet also agre-ed to make 120,000 available interest-free, half of which the community association will use to carry out essential repairs to the building . It intends to rename it Hebden Bridge Town Hall.

Calderdale Council will continue to rent some office space.

Andrew Bibby, Hebden Bridge Community Association trustee, said: "This historic decision will ensure that one of the finest buildings in our town continues to be a focal point in community life."
