Old school is sold off for £170,000
A VILLAGE school that closed in 1983 has finally been sold at auction by Calderdale Council for £170,000.
Vale School, at Cornholme, Todmorden, was built in 1881 for infants, juniors and senior children.
In 1950 it became solely an and infants and nursery school.
Parents mounted a long campaign to keep the school open but by the time it closed, it had only 40 pupils.
The council had intended to demolish the building but in 1985 an association was set up to turn it into a community centre.
Activitites declined over the years and finally the council decided it should go under the hammer.
It is not known who has bought the school but any plans to alter it will require planning approval.
