Open meeting to discuss town development plans

EXCITING redevelopment plans for Elland will be discussed at an open meeting tomorrow (Saturday).

The Elland and District Partnership has welcomed investment plans and wants the community to have its say on the proposals.

Under schemes put forward the town's municipal buildings could be combined in a new civic centre costing 4 million.

And nearly another 1 million could be spent in the town centre conservation area in an English Heritage-backed scheme.

Calderdale Council has agreed a feasibility study for the civic centre which would merge offices, the library, Wainwright Hall and the town's police station on the site of the Coronation Street car park.

The development could also include an enterprise centre and possibly shops.

Partnership chairman Joe Braithwaite said the civic centre would replace a void in the town left in 1968 when old shops were demolished.

"Both developments would give a major boost to Elland and it is all quite positive but decisions should be taken with consultation in the town," he said.

"Things are shaping up with these positive moves."

He said surplus buildings could be adapted to residential use and the money raised put towards redevelopment costs.

Tomorrow, the partnership holds an open meeting and will discuss the proposals with the public.

Refreshments will be served from 10am for a 10.30am start at the Cartwheel Club, Huddersfield Road, Elland.
