Our veggie plot idea is shown to nation
A SCHEME to turn Calderdale's roadside verges into fruit and vegetable plots was showcased at the Royal Horticultural Hall, London.
Incredible Edible Todmorden was one of 19 imaginative projects chosen by the Sustainable Development Commission for an exhibition hosted by the Prince of Wales.
"It is incredible how fruit and veg has been springing up all over the Calder Valley," said Calderdale Council's community services spokesman Ian Cooper.
"Incredible Edible Todmorden is an example to communities across the country of how they can make a difference by working together and planting small seeds that grow into big changes."
The event at the hall at Vincent Square, Westminster, yesterday was designed to celebrates enthusiasm for sustainable development and was co-hosted by Jonathon Porritt, Jonathan Dimbleby, Anna Ford and Rosie Boycott.
Representatives from the council and the Incredible Edible scheme discussed their work with Government ministers, policy makers, strategists, business and community leaders.
Incredible Edible Todmorden aims to increase the amount of local food grown and eaten in the town and surrounding area and the council wants to extend it by allowing other groups to use council-owned land for growing produce.
