Oven may have been at centre of fatal pie factory explosion
THE investigation into a fatal pie factory blast is expected to focus on a huge oven which was destroyed.
Company sales manager Graham Easby said the amount of damage led him to believe the oven or a gas pipe leading to it was to blame for the explosion at Andrew Jones Pies in Old Leeds Road, Huddersfield.
"There is nothing left of it," he said.
David Cole, 37, of Salterhebble, Halifax, lost his life in Friday's blast, which also left a Huddersfield man badly hurt.
Staff have been told production could re-start within days at a mothballed Brighouse factory.
"Livelihoods depend on us because we supply so many people and pay our staff's wages. We have to carry on," owner Andrew Jones said.
"Someone has challenged me to have a pie by the end of the week."
The company, which has shops in Marsh and Brighouse, has discussed using a Brighouse bakery formerly used by the firm.
Mr Jones paid tribute to Mr Cole, his colleague of 10 years.
He said: "There was nobody that could have been more loyal than him. David was a good bloke and a good laugh to be with. It's a family firm so he was like a friend."
Baker Marcus Cartwright, 24, of Crosland Moor, suffered broken ribs, bruising to his spine and minor burns in the incident.
His condition at Leeds General Infirmary is serious but steadily improving.
Four other workers suffered minor injuries.
The blast is being investigated by police, fire officials and the Health and Safety Executive.
