Peregrine falcon chicks take to the air at Piece Hall
FALCON chicks are taking their first flights around a Halifax landmark.
The little peregrines have been spotted soaring around the Piece Hall as they learn to fly and hunt for food.
The falcons have been nesting in the Square Church spire for 18 months.
In June 2007 a breeding pair set up home in the former church, which overlooks the Piece Hall. Now the parents have hatched chicks and visitors to the site could be in store for some stunning aerial displays before they fly the nest.
Michael Devereux, Piece Hall operations manager, said: "The birds are a magnificent sight and now the chicks have fledged, we expect them to be gone in a week or so, once they learn to fend for themselves."
The RSPB will be keeping an eye on the Halifax falcons and is running a campaign about the illegal killing of birds of prey.
Matthew Capper, from the charity, said: "It's fantastic news that peregrine falcons are rearing their chicks in Halifax. Not that long ago they were very rare but this is a great sign their numbers are recovering."
