Police 'sting' nailed student who put stolen quad bike up for sale online

A STUDENT who tried to sell a stolen quad bike online has escaped going to jail.

Bilal Khan, 22, was stung when its owner's son spotted the missing vehicle on an auction website five days after it went missing and alerted police.

It had been snatched from Marcus Rawson's home in Cinder Hills Lane, Siddal, Halifax on April 7 last year.

Officers set up a viewing, posing as prospective buyers and found the bike behind Khan's house in Park Grove, Frizinghall, Bradford.

A Suzuki quad bike and Yamaha motorcycle, reported missing from the Leeds area, were also found in the back garden.

The three were worth more than 7,000.

Khan, who denied handling stolen goods, said he bought the Suzuki from two strangers he had seen riding it in in Bowling Back Lane, Bradford, and got the other two from a "friend of a friend" for 800.

The automotive engineering student believed both to be legitimate sales, he claimed.

He said he had been interested in bikes since the age of eight and had bought and sold dozens over the years.

A jury took an hour to unanimously convict him after a trial at Bradford Crown Court last month.

On Friday Judge Benson sentenced him to six months' imprisonment for each count, suspended for two years. He was ordered to complete 200 hours' unpaid work.
