Post office will be selling wine
RESIDENTS in the Skircoat ward can now buy wine and beer with their stamps and daily newspapers.
In a first for Calderdale, the council licensing committee has allowed the Skircoat Green post office, Skircoat Green, Halifax to sell alcohol.
Postmistress Heather Rigg and husband Broderick can sell booze between 9am and 10pm.
The couple told the committee they plan to sell quality wine and beers from local breweries such as the Little Valley Brewery, Cragg Vale.
"Several customers have expressed a desire to buy alcohol. But we don't want to stack it high and sell it cheap," Mr Rigg said.
"We want to stock fine wine and local beers designed to take home and enjoy with a meal."
"We are over the moon. The post office can't survive on its own – it needed to be part of a bigger picture."
There was just one objector from Chatha's off-licence who was represented by solicitor Derek Hallam.
The couple, who have run the post office since April, say the licence application is just one of many plans they have for the shop.
Their aim is to include the post office in a extensive mini-market.
The premises has been refurbished and includes installing disabled and pushchair access.
They are also transforming living quarters above the post office into three apartments, intended for short-term business rental.
In summer Mr and Mrs Rigg also hope to run a pavement cafe.
Grenville Horsfall (Cons, Skircoat) said: "A restriction of selling alcohol from 9am to 10pm is not too bad. It will stop hooligans hanging around outside.
"I think it will help build up the post office."
