Probe into sandwich
shop bus crash
INVESTIGATIONS continued today into a crash in which a bendy bus demolished the front of a Leeds sandwich shop.
A spokesman for Ainsleys, on Infirmary Street, said it had been “a miracle” no customers had been in the line of the bus or more seriously hurt when it ploughed into the shop at 11.10am yesterday.
Three people - a woman aged in her 20s on the nearby footpath, a bus driver buying a snack in the shop and the driver of the bus - suffered minor injuries.
Andrew Bell, Ainsleys’ sales and marketing manager, said the front of the shop had been extensively damaged and had been boarded up after the Leeds First bus was pulled from the wreckage.
Repairs
Structural engineers were examining the premises to assess how quickly the building could be repaired.
Ambulances and fire service crews were both sent to the scene of the crash near to the junction with East Parade.
As reported in later editions of yesterday’s YEP the road was closed for more than two hours.
Police have appealed for witnesses to ring Holbeck Police Helpdesk on 0113 2414659.
Today, Charles Donnelly, marketing manager for Leeds First, said that the cause of the crash was still unknown.
Three different enquiries were taking place and the vehicle involved was being examined for faults by the police, the Department of Transport and First Bus’s own engineers.
There had been five passengers on the bus at the time but none had been hurt.
