Project Challenge lands £40,000 to keep up good work

A CHARITY that works with disaffected young people has been awarded £40,000 to continue its good work.

Project Challenge, which works with 16 to 24-year-olds to help get them into employment, education or training, was given the cash by the Lloyds TSB Foundation.

The Halifax-based charity's business manager, Lorna Butterick, said she was thrilled with the grant, which will be used to pay staff.

"It helps the whole of the project because if it didn't fund the salaries that money would have to come from somewhere else," she said.

"We actually applied for a lower amount and they gave us more, which was absolutely fantastic.

"They came to visit us on a day when it was just pandemonium and they could physically see the good work that's being done."

The charity currently works with around 40 young people each week across three support programmes.

It aims to unlock their potential by building their confidence and self esteem with a mixture of classroom learning and challenging expeditions.

Staff won an 'Oscar' for their work at Voluntary Action Calderdale's fifth Annual Volunteers Oscars in June.

Pat Greenwood, regional grant manager for the Lloyds TSB Foundation, explains: "The foundation is proud to fund charities that deliver lasting changes and benefits in the heart of the community to tackle disadvantage.

"We wish Project Challenge every success in their future."
