Raiders crash in at store

RAIDERS smashed their way through a shop ceiling to grab stock and cash running into thousands of pounds.

Cigarettes, mobile phone top-ups, spirits and even money from charity boxes was snatched in the break-in at Double O Newsagents and Convenience Store, Ovenden, Halifax.

Owner Kenny Birk estimates the damage alone could amount to 20,000.

The culprits hit the store in the early hours of yesterday, forcing open a door at the back of the shop which leads to the flat above.

Inside the flat, they removed laminate flooring, pulled up floorboards and pushed through the shop ceiling.

Mr Birk arrived at around 7.45am yesterday to open up to find the ceiling collapsed and lights and wires hanging down and dust all over the floor.

He is still counting how much stock and money has been taken but thinks it could be 10,000.

"They must have been upstairs in the flat for at least half an hour," he said.

"When I arrived at the shop I just thought the ceiling had collapsed. Then I realised cigarettes had been taken."

He said the flat was usually let but had been empty for a couple of months while they refurbished it. The shop was shut yesterday but Mr Birk was hoping to have temporary repairs carried out and re-open as soon as possible.

He has been running the store since May 2009. Anyone with information about the break-in should call Calderdale CID on 01422 337085 or CrimeStoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
