Real ale is booming here in Calderdale! Seven new pubs star in Good Beer Guide

BOOZE sales might be at their lowest for 80 years but real ale is booming in Calderdale with seven new pub entries in the Good Beer Guide.

The 2010 version of the beer drinkers' bible includes top watering holes in Hipperholme, Halifax, Brighouse, Rastrick and Todmorden.

According to the guide and the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra), West Yorkshire is the fastest-growing real-ale area in the UK, with 34 small breweries.

Dutch-born Wim van der Spek, who set up the Little Valley Brewery at Cragg Vale four years ago, said the water in Calderdale was just perfect for brewing. Asda has now started stocking his beers in some stores including Halifax.

Beers are also produced for Elland-based Suma Wholefoods under its own label.

Mark and Katie Feasey, of the Old Ship Inn, Bethel Street, Brighouse, have been included in the new guide. Since taking over in March 2008 they have concentrated on real ale and now serve seven beers.

"Real ale seemed the way forward in a dying trade and it seems to be working," said Mr Feasey.

"It is flying out and we use local breweries."

Camra said total beer sales were at their lowest since the Great Depres-sion, but real ale was enjoying rapid growth with more breweries than at any time since the Second World War. More than 70 breweries were set up during the last year, bringing the total to 711 nationwide.

Following the West Yorkshire region is Norfolk with 31, and Derbyshire with 28.
