Repeat crimes cut

REOFFENDING in Calder-dale has fallen by up to 13 per cent, new figures show.

The Ministry of Justice has also revealed the number of adult offenders committing further crimes has dropped by 10 per cent across West Yorkshire for 2009-10.

It puts the county among the best in England, where the overall drop was three per cent.

Sue Hall, West Yorkshire Probation Trust chief executive, said: "It is wonderful to see our hard work is achieving real results, demonstrating that probation is incredibly effective and a viable alternative to short prison sentences."

Probation staff supervised offenders carrying out 440,276 hours of community payback over the last 12 months.

Of 3,163 offenders surveyed about their unpaid work, 86 per cent said they were glad to have done something for the community and 78 per cent said they were less likely to turn to crime again.
