Rocking brothers to go head to head in battle of the bands final

ROCK 'n' roll is well known for its sibling rivalries.

Oasis brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher are famous for their violent spats, The Everly Brothers didn't speak to each other for 10 years and Ray and Dave Davies spent almost as much time arguing as they did playing in The Kinks.

But for this pair of Calderdale brothers, musical tensions will be lived out live on stage when they go head to head in a battle of the bands final tonight.

John Wadsworth, 20, bassist with the Latter Day Saints, said: "We've been saying for ages we're far better than his mob and on Thursday we're going to prove it once and for all."

But sibling Sam, 18, lead guitarist with the Submaniks, has other ideas. He said: "I used to be in their band two years ago but left because I got bored. They just won't be good enough to compete."

The brothers, of Red Brink Lane, Hubberton, Sowerby, have both made it to the contest's final – to be held at Halifax's Bar 11 – after beating competition from more than 20 bands from across Calderdale in a series of weekly heats.

And with 500 up for grabs for the winner there will be no family niceties on the night.

John, a radiography student at the University of Cumbria, said: "We're delighted just to have made the final.

"To be fair, Sam's band are okay but they're not a patch on us. It'll be good to show his lot a few moves on the night."

But Sam, a sixth former at Ryburn Valley High, retorted: "We've got a good funky sound that makes people want to dance.

"Our kid just sounds like a poor man's Oasis."
