'Royal' firm left reeling in job shock

A PIONEERING firm chosen for a visit from Princess Anne has hit troubled times and is shedding jobs.

More than 50 workers are going at i-plas and its sister company, Lynwood Products, from premises in Ridings Business Park, Hopwood Lane, Halifax.

The Princess Royal visited i-plas last October when she unveiled a commemorative plaque.

Managing director Howard Waghorn said at that time he hoped the firm could continue on a path of excellence and look forward to more Royal visits.

The cuts at Lynwood follow its sale to paintbrush manufacturers L. G. Harris and Co Ltd, of Bromsgrove, and at i-plas due to reorganisation of the business.

Gary Jordan, managing director of L. G. Harris, confirmed his company would be transferring the Lynwood jobs to Worcestershire.

He said: "It is an asset purchase. We have a large plant in Bromsgrove and the decorating products division is moving down here.

"We very much regret the need for redundancies and have offered work here but understandably most people wouldn't want to move two and a half hours away for factory-floor jobs."

An employee told the Courier, around two dozen jobs were going this week at Lynwood Products and another 32 will be axed next week from both companies.

Lynwood was formed in 1980 and makes decorating products and plasticware.

"It is very sad. Some people have been at Lynwood for 25 years," said the worker.

i-plas was formed in 1999 and takes UK mixed plastic waste that would otherwise be destined for landfill and converts it into new uses such as street furniture.

It was initially formed with support from the European Landfill Tax Scheme and Calderdale Council in recognition that plastic waste was a growing environmental concern.

i-plas directors were unavailable for comment.
