Rugby game for Andrew

FRIENDS came together to remember a promising rugby player who died while on holiday in Cornwall.

Andrew Curwell, a sixth-former at Rishworth School, was found at the bottom of cliffs in Newquay in June last year.

The 18-year-old, of Oldham, played rugby union for Yorkshire and league for Saddleworth Rangers and Leeds Rhinos.

His school friends and former playing colleagues played a memorial match at Old Rishworthians RUFC, Copley, for the Andrew Curwell Celebration Cup.

Rangers won the game against his school friends 19-14.

Around 350 was raised for the Saddleworth Rangers Trust set up in memory of Andrew which will be used to support young rugby players from both codes.

His father, Steve, said: "It was great his old school chums and team-mates came out to remember him."

Mr Curwell said people had pledged support for the Trust and more fund-raising events would be planned including a sportsman's dinner and a return rugby match at Saddleworth.
