Sacred Heart Primary wins Sing a Song for Christmas competition

CHRISTMAS came early at Sacred Heart Primary School when their choir was revealed as winner of the Courier's first ever Sing a Song for Christmas competition.

Their song I Saw a Star received a staggering 99,457 votes – 39 per cent of all votes cast and more than twice as many as runner-up Parkinson Lane Community Primary School.

The delighted youngsters at the Sowerby school will receive a 200 prize as well as the title of 2007 Sing a Song for Christmas winners.

Mums, dads, aunties, uncles, grandparents and friends have all been logging on to www.halifaxcourier.co.uk to vote for the 50-strong school choir, which is made up pupils aged seven to 11 and run by music teacher John Goulding.

Teaching assistant Anne Bridges, who plays piano for the choir, found out they had racked up the highest number of votes when the polls stopped at 2pm yesterday just as the choir were returning from a performance at a local church.

She said: "I went around all the classes to tell the children and they all started cheering straight away.

"We did not expect to win. We just wanted to take part.

"The children have all been getting everyone they know to vote, even relatives from further afield."

Ten-year-old Lewis Scott said his classmates had been voting on the school's computers during break times.

And Olivia Ward, also 10, said she had asked her friends and relatives from other schools who had not reached the final 10 to vote for Sacred Heart.

"When we found out we had won we were so happy we actually screamed," she said.

Katie Wisniewski, 10, said: "We didn't exactly expect to win, we were just having fun. I think the most important thing is that we enjoy singing.

"I have a big family and they have all been voting."

Head teacher Moya Whitworth said she and the rest of the staff were extremely proud of the youngsters.

"The choir have worked very hard. They do a lot of performances in the local community because they want to give something back."

She said the prize money may be used to buy matching sweatshirts for the choir.

Thirty-seven schools entered the contest and videos of every group singing their chosen seasonal song were posted online. People voted for their favourite and last week the top 10 went through to the final.

Yesterday the polls closed and the votes were counted. Parkinson Lane came second with 42,911 votes and Northowram Primary School was third with 34,486.

This section will remain on the site and all the videos will still be viewable, so come back and watch the entries as many times as you like.
