Scout checks missed sex pest
THE Scout Association has admitted it does not know whether leaders in Calderdale were told a pervert Scout master had been cautioned by police.
David Sladdin, 42, of Catherine Street, Elland, received a caution 11 years ago for a sexual offence but continued working for the movement in a position of trust for a further seven years until a Criminal Records Bureau check revealed his record, forcing him to resign.
Sladdin was leader of the 7th Elland Scouts but went on to become a district commissioner in 1997 and has been involved with the organisation for over 20 years.
On October 22, Sladd-in was again caught indulging in a sexual act in front of two boys, aged 11 and 13. He admitted the offence and will be sentenced at Bradford Crown Court tomorrow.
When quizzed about their vetting procedures, Chris Foster, spokesman for the Scout Association said: “In 1995 we had a confidential inquiry computer based system for checking whether or not people were suitable for working with children”
When asked if there were procedures in place for vetting existing members which would have led to Sladdin’s caution being revealed, Mr Foster was unable to answer categorically yes or no.
