Sell-out Olly Muirs takes Halifax by storm
WITH the words "Good evening, Halifax" the sell-out crowd screamed and the cheeky smile of X Factor runner-up Olly Murs filled the stage.
Liquid nightclub sold all 1,000 tickets for the event and the clubbers, mainly women, shrieked like they were watching Take That.
His set of six songs, included an acapella version of the Jungle Book classic I Wanna Be Like You and his X Factor audition piece Stevie Wonder's Superstition. He also performed Twist and Shout, and Robbie Williams's Angels.
The Essex boy can certainly work a crowd. Everything from the hip shakes to the wiggles, his gig was much more than the standard reality star appearance – he worked the crowd into a frenzy.
Liquid marketing manager Neil Maguire said: "I have never seen a reaction like it."
Despite having had 1,000 people chanting his name, it seems Olly has yet to fall into the reality star trap of becoming too big for his boots.
He made time to speak to everyone, from staff to management, happily posing for pictures with queues of girls. He described the gig as "unbelievable".
"The reaction was great. It was just phenomenal," he told the Courier.
It's been a whirlwind for Olly since his first audition in May 2009. He took just a day and a half off from his non-stop touring schedule to relax with his family over Christmas.
"I am having the time of my life," said the 25-year-old.
He said he wouldn't change anything about the last nine months, or being the runner-up in the talent competition to Joe McElderry.
"Joe released the single, but he hasn't been able to gig because he has to wait until the tour starts."
His next challenge is the X Factor tour, which starts on Saturday.
After that, it's all about his own career. "I can't confirm anything yet, but at some point this year there will be a single and album.
"I am living the dream but there's still a lot to do", he said.
