Sexual health camper van rolls into town

A BIG Brother-style diary room is being used to help tackle sexual diseases.

NHS Calderdale is asking 16 to 24-year-olds to hop on the Sexual Health Camper Van and give their views to camera on chlamydia.

They will be asked what they know about chlamydia, where they would like to get screened for the infection and what would stop them getting checked.

From the answers to these questions, the health trust hopes to improve its services.

Kate Naylor, NHS Calderdale's sexual health programme manager, said she was confident the approach would prove popular with young people because of its "exciting, unusual and of-the-moment nature".

"Chlamydia screening kits will of course be available on the Sexual Health Camper Van but the main reason for the facility is for us to find out what young people's views are so that the most accessible chlamydia screening service can be provided for every corner of Calderdale," she said.

"It is hoped we will get much more honest answers from members of the public using this method as they will be able to answer the questions in their own words, rather than completing a questionnaire.

"The results will be taken very seriously and will help shape Chlamydia screening in the future.

"This is a great opportunity for Calderdale's young people to become involved in influencing of one our key services."

NHS Calderdale is the first primary care trust in the country to use this technique.

Members of Chlamydia Screening Programme will be on the Sexual Health Camper Van to offer advice.

Earlier this week it toured the Calder Valley, yesterday it was at Calderdale College in Halifax, and Commercial Street in Brighouse and today it will be at George Street in Halifax town centre from 6pm to 10pm.
