SIX SPEED LIMITS IN TWO MILES
DEMON drivers who race along rural roads in Calderdale will soon have to slow down.
Motorists will face six separate speed limits covering just two miles between Blackshaw Head and Heptonstall.
And 15 speed humps are planned for a country lane between the outskirts of Bradshaw, Halifax, and Queensbury.
Heptonstall Parish Council has been campaigning for years for speed curbs, especially close to Colden Primary School.
The governors have also been worried about the possibility of accidents on the narrow road especially at the end of
the school day when parents arrive to collect their children.
Parish councillor John Harwood said the road was very dangerous and although he wasn't aware of any serious accidents recently there had been a number of near-misses.
A 30mph limit was imposed through the village of Blackshaw Head several years ago and Calderdale Council intends to impose a 40mph limit down the steep hill to Jack Bridge.
A 20mph limit outside the school would change to 30mph through Edge Hey Green and Knowle Top where the restriction would end.
"Because of the number of parked cars, the road is down to a single lane for most of the way," said Coun Harwood.
"The signs should act as a deterrent to speeding drivers but it might be down to parents and those who live in the area to police it," he said.
According to road-safety experts, speed restrictions are the best way of preventing
accidents to drivers and pedestrians.
The public have until August 16 to make representations to the council about the proposals for the Colden area.
They have until the end of August to object to Bradford Council's plans for the 15 speed humps on Roper Lane, Queensbury.
Councillor Michael Walls (Con, Queensbury) said many drivers ignored the speed restrictions which were in force and speed humps appeared to be the best alternative.
"We have come up with proposals in response to
concerns from residents and I am sure that it can be amended if that's what people want," he said.
