Smoking ban: Council cracks down after 46 complaints about law breakers
A TOTAL of 46 complaints have been made about people flouting the smoking ban in Calderdale.
Calderdale Council has received the reports of people breaking the law since the ban on lighting up indoors was introduced six months ago.
One fixed penalty notice has been issued and 43 written warnings have been given for allowing smoking in a public place.
The council has issued a massive 346 written warnings to businesses for failing to display non-smoking signs.
One premises is under investigation for allegedly allowing smoking inside.
A ban on smoking indoors came into effect on July 1.
Landlords face a hefty 2,500 fine if they let people smoke inside and anyone caught smoking has to pay 50.
The ban also means owners of smoke-free buildings can be handed a 200 on-the-spot fine if they don't put up no-smoking signs.
Members of the public can report anyone they see breaching the ban by calling a freephone helpline.
Enforcing the new ban is down to the council's environmental health department.
Calderdale Council has pledged to crack down on any premises that allows smoking indoors.
Last month Halifax man Stuart Smith appeared in court charged with allowing people to smoke at the College Arms, Huddersfield.
Mr Smith, 39, of Newlands Farm, Warley, pleaded not guilty to flouting the ban and failing to display no smoking signs.
He was remanded on bail for a pre-trial review on February 29.
The pub, which is shut, is owned by Admiral Taverns, said Mr Smith was not the licensee of the pub.
