Somerset House lands award
The Halifax Renaissance restoration of Somerset House has won a top award.
The 243-year-old mansion in Rawson Street, Halifax, won the restoration of a Georgian building in an urban setting award at the Georgian Group 2009 architectural awards.
The Grade II listed building, originally known as Royds House, beat 70 other entrants to land the top prize, presented by the Duke of Gloucester at Christie's, London.
Calderdale Council leader Stephen Baines said: "This is really great news. A lot of work was carried out to ensure Somerset House was restored to the best possible standard.
"It is a real asset to Halifax, reflecting the history of the town."
The building had been hidden away by a row of shops since 1901, but was restored by Tyler Projects (Halifax) with funding from Yorkshire Forward and Calderdale Council through the Halifax Renaissance scheme.
Halifax Civic Trust kick-started the project in 1998.
