Students' ecology film wins top prize

FUTURE filmmakers won a global award for a film on recycling.

Pupils from Ryburn Valley High School, Sowerby, won the best cinematography prize for their film Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

The four-minute piece about environmental issues was entered into the Kid Witness News competition, a global video education programme supported by Panasonic.

The aim is to boost creativity and communication skills by getting 10 to 15-year-olds to make their own films. It is the second year the school has been honoured.

Panasonic loaned Ryburn a 3,000 high-definition camera, which the school will now get to keep.

Judges Graham Kay and Paul Press said the team showed great creativity.

Nikki Clarke and Lauren Komarynskyj, both 15, are Year 10 students and are both taking media studies GCSE.

Lauren said: "We chose the theme of ecology to make more people aware of the issue. For the film we interviewed Hilary Benn, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs."

Nikki added: "We also interviewed people at the tip in Sowerby Bridge. It was really good doing stuff with the camera and I have learned a lot."

The team of 10 students collected their prize at a ceremony at the Assembly Rooms in Derby.
