Students get a new spin on fun

STUDENTS got a new spin on healthy living with a disc workshop.

Calderdale College held a Healthy Living Week and encouraged students to try out new sports and adopt a healthier lifestyle.

Craig Waterworth, sports development officer, said: "The chance to try something new makes it all the more fun. This is the first time that we've had disc sports specialists in and they've opened it right up for students with "ultrastars", "buzzes", "drivers" and the games of ultimate and disc golf. It goes way beyond just throwing! We're trying to get across the message that healthy bodies and healthy minds go hand in hand."

The programme included workshops on stress management, healthy eating, exercising to music and takeuchi-ryu, a 16th-century Japanese martial art.

Halifax Golf Club also gave students and staff the chance to compete in a nine-hole golf challenge.

Jameel Nawaz, 19, sports development and fitness student, said: "It's been great. This is all about passing on a bit of knowledge and making people more aware."
