Sue to Race for Life in Carol's memory
TWO years ago she would not have been able to walk more than a mile, now Sue Burger is taking on the Race for Life.
Inspired be good friend Carol Exley who lost her battle against liver cancer five years ago, the grandmother from Blackshaw Head has overcome a serious ankle injury to join in the 5km event.
She wants to be part of the Courier's Join Our Club campaign to encourage others to be active.
"If I can do it, other people can," said the 55-year-old, of Davy Cottages.
The friends, both keen horse riders, met when they lived in Leeds and started a successful bridleways group that ran for 10 years.
Sue said: "I think Carol would be really pleased I'm doing it.
"She was a real fighter and if she could be here, she'd be with me doing it for someone else."
Sue is training for the Burnley leg of the Race for Life, which takes place in May, by walking her two dogs and caring for her eight horses.
She is celebrating being able to take part after recovering from an ankle injury that left her with a painful calcified achilles tendon and losing more than two stones.
"I was unable to walk more than a short distance for the best part of three months.
"In October 2007 I joined Weight Watchers in Hebden Bridge and lost 37lbs. I am now on the verge of completeing training to be a Weight Watchers leader myself so that I can help others to lose weight and have better lives.
"I feel fantastic, have dropped several clothes sizes and most importantly, I can walk for miles over the hills I love around my home in Blackshaw Head, something I thought I would never do again."
Sue has already done several sponsored walks for the British Heart Foundation and is looking forward to doing the Race for Life with her grand-daughter, 18-year-old Kirsten Burger.
"I'm hoping to walk and run it. The more people that do it the better."
