Sun comes out for Hawaiian-themed Todmorden Carnival
GRASS skirts, ukuleles and surf boards were paraded through the streets for this year's Hawaiian-themed Todmorden Carnival.
Thousands flocked to Centre Vale Park for the event which returned for a second time following a three-year break.
Chairman of the carnival committee Philip Clarke said he had run out of gate tickets early on, and had to send out for more.
"We had between 3,000 and 3,500 people. It was a great day," said Mr Clarke, who has been chairman for 14 years.
"We try to build on the event every year."
Glorious sunshine helped encourage crowds to line up and watch the colourful carnival procession of floats, musicians, dancers and majorettes.
Many had taken on the carnival's Hawaiian theme, wearing bikinis, bright shirts and flowers in their hair.
They included a group from the Acorn Centre Youth Group in Todmorden who said they had been working for months on their costumes.
Taking pride of place were gala queen Jodie Richardson, 12, and gala princess Careese Poole, 11, handing out garlands to those watching.
On the carnival field there were a host of attractions, from funfair rides and inflatable slides to mini motorbikes and games.
Rebecca Lee, from Todmorden, who was at the carnival with her husband Dean, four-year-old son Jake and two-year-old daughter Megan, said: "It's a really friendly atmosphere and really good to see every one out."
Mayor of Todmorden Cheryl Stovin who opened the event said: "It's absolutely wonderful to see so many people have turned out and Todmorden so busy.
"The carnival committee have worked so hard."
